Sharon's Report

This past week I logged 12 running miles and 16 biking miles.  The week before I only ran 7 but went skiing for about 1.5 hours and played nightly in the pool for 3 days in a row, so that counts for something.  In addition to my running and biking miles, I try to get a high-intensity strength circuit workout in a couple of times a week.  There's a kettlebell-inspired one that Keith and I love and I'll have to video and share it some time soon.  I love it because it can be done at home - I've done it many times in my bedroom! - just using the dumbbells I have and it's quick, feels good and I get results!

I also did several of the bonus challenges:  I told Keith and the girls I love them and I'm glad that they're healthy and happy.  Regan and Zoey just stared at me and blinked a few times, but I think Keith appreciated the words of encouragement.  At least that's what I got from the grunt he gave in response.  The girls and I did an after-breakfast neighborhood walk a few times.  We ate oatmeal for breakfast several times and we always eat at least 1 fruit/veggie with each meal, so we're trying to keep the ol' tickers healthy!

Also, I'm sorry if I was misleading about the points and due dates, etc.  Just to clarify:  The February challenge of choosing and posting a mantra is worth 1 point if it's done by Feb. 28.  The bonus February challenge is 1 point if you do and report doing at least 3 of the listed activities (sorry no extra points for going above and beyond - just a big pat on the back!) by Feb. 28.  And, finally, there are no points awarded by contributing to the cash pot.  The reward for that is just making your potential winnings that much more!  I just gave a due date to spur you into action, but it'll be just fine to send it whenever it's convenient.

I love my family!  I think you guys are great! Oh, and, by the way, I'm glad you're working to improve your health and happiness!

More thoughts

Here are a couple of thoughts by Clayton M. Christensen: "Don't worry about the level of individual prominence you have achieved; worry about the individuals you have helped become better people." and "Think about the metric by which your life will be judged, and make a resolution to live every day so that in the end, your life will be judged a success."
courtney's getting the quote in at the last minute.

The Quote

The battle must be fought. Victory cannot come by default. So it is in the battles of life. Life will never spread itself in an unobstructed view before us. We must anticipate the approaching forks and turnings in the road. We cannot hope to reach our desired journey's end if we think aimlessly about whether to go east or west. We must make our decisions purposefully. Our most significant opportunities will be found in times of greatest difficulty. ~Thomas S. Monson

Devin's End o' Feb update

Oof. Well I started of the second half of the month strong logging a little over 15 miles of running. But the next week I had to work crazy hours and only exercised twice.

However, I did pretty much everything Sharon had on the bonus list. I had fruit everyday. I parked four blocks from work every day (that's as close as I can for free). I always take the stairs instead of the elevator at work and…um… well I can't remember the others, only that I didn't do any chores more vigorously than normal.

Hoping to get back on the exercise track this week. And we'll contribute to the pot one of these days soon. Just have to remember at sometime other than 10:25 on a Sunday night.

Cougs (of the Washington variety) beat the Dawgs today to sweep the season series. Now if they could just figure out a way to not lose to Arizona State. Hey how did that get in here!! That's not about the challenge. Wink.

Marie's Report

February was a rough month for me with this challenge. The first 2 weeks I was sick, which made exercise and such real tough. Then we went on the cruise, which was totally fun and we did stairs all the time, but the amount of food, and I might add that this food was not exactly the healthy kind, was in complete abundance and we partook freely. It was truly an amazing experience, and one I highly recommend.
I have been eating a lot of salads and celery and hope to get myself back on track quickly.
I started a while ago parking further from the stores and such because it was an easy way for me to get a little bit of exercise with out much effort. I have posted my mantra, in fact a couple of them throughout the house. My latest one is on the fridge and I got it from my lesson on the sermon on the mount. It is Matthew 5:6. It is "Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled (with the Holy Ghost). I need to be filled with something other than food because as you can tell that has never satisfied me. I think I have hit on a key for me.
Love you all and hope the best for everyone

Plugging Along

I have been making good progress this week. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I am in the process of moving. There is a hidden workout for sure. I have been walking around the house and packing things up, lifting heavy objects, and walking up and down 2 flights of stairs more times than I can count. My roommates parents are renting out a house to us that they just bought an are allowing us to slowly move in over the next little while since we are so pressed for time and can't seem to pull off a move in the normal amount of time. Anyhow, I have been substituting my workouts for 3+ hour moving sessions. They seem to be doing a little bit more for me since I have lost 6 pounds over the past couple of weeks.
It may be more than just this extra physical activity I have been getting in, but it could also be that I am eating healthier. I am eating at home far more often now, and eating many more fruits and vegetables since they are a common thing both my roommate and I can eat. We are slowly adjusting to her new diet, but it is certainly for the better.
My weight loss could be attributed also towards the bonus point challenge for this month. As I said before I got a freebie with the parking one. I always have to walk quite a distance from my parking spot at work. Also as I said before I am eating more fruits and veggies. I am trying to make them green and fibrous, but I just can't do celery. Instead I eat kiwis, asparagus, and grapes. Also as I said above, I have been doing a lot more housework and since I am trying to make it count for a work out, I am certainly giving it a little more gusto. I also have been eating oatmeal for breakfast at least 4-5 times a week. Regardless of where my pounds were lost, I am happy they were and I hope not to find them again. Also I must say thanks for this extra challenge this month because it certainly helps me to keep my ultimate goal in mind.

Another report

This is mom with another report on how I'm doing. The date is 2/27/11.

I am most happy to report that I have completed everything and expect to see my points go up.

I have walked four times a week for the past two weeks and it wasn't easy because it has been so cold.

I'm sorry but I don't recognize the song, "I want money, Lots and lots of money." If you want me to recognize a song, it will have to be one from the 40s or 50s. However, I do want money, lots and lots of money and I'm on my way to winning it.

I'm sorry but I haven't been anywhere so I could take the stairs instead of the elevator. I only do that about once a year when I go in to see the doctor. I did park at the far end of the parking lot at the grocery store. However, this past week was so cold that I only parked half way to the far end of the parking lot. I didn't have my heavy coat on. I took a stroll every day that I walked at lunchtime as that is when I do my walking. I guess you could call my walks a stroll. I did vacuum twice in the past two weeks and I tried to do it with vigor. (At least I only had to stop once to rest while vacuuming the whole house.) The after dinner walks are out. My feet are hurting too bad at that time of day to walk. I went back to eating oatmeal for breakfast. I think Dad is putting a little more salt in it for my sake. I bought some celery and have been eating it every day for lunch. I told as many people as I could remember to before their post went to spam that I loved them and was glad they were working to improve their health and happiness. I know I said it to more than one person. So that should qualify me for another point.

I am also sending in Lynn's money tomorrow as she said she doesn't get paid until Wednesday and I told her that was too late for a point amd that I would send hers in if she would pay me back. She said she would. Does that qualify for an extra good neighbor point?

So, that's what I have done. Sigue Adelante! Did I miss anything?

I Want Money, Lots and Lots of Money

Remember that songThe '80's rock!

Anyway, the March 1 deadline approaches.  Remember way back about a month ago, I called for your cash pot donations???  Well, just in case you forgot, I'm reminding you!  If your donation is not post marked by March 1, then you lose out.  I kid.  Of course I'll accept a donation at any time.  However, this is the last time I'm putting a call out for it.  Those of you who don't pitch in will just have to wallow in your guilt for not participating because I know that even though you'll tuck it away in the back of your brain as insignificant or as something you'll get to later, it'll be threre niggling away at your peace of mind, bothering you that there's something that you need to get done but just haven't taken the 3 minutes out of your schedule to tuck the tiny amount of cash into an envelope, address it and send it off in the mail.

But, really, no biggie.

Just pitch in if you can.

I already know which pair(s) of shoes I'm gonna buy with the winnings!

Last Days To Earn Your Points!

Don't let yourself fall behind on the "Not-So-Dumbbell" monthly challenge.  Easy, easy way to earn points - so don't miss out!  To remind you:  One (1) point earned for picking a mantra/quote/mission statement to post somewhere where you will see it daily.  One (1) bonus point earned for completing 3 of the activities I listed.  Please scroll down and see previous post "Bonus February Challenge" to be reminded of those activities.  Good job to those who have already done any of them.  To the others, you still have a couple of days but you must email me or post in order to get credit!

Here's another great quote to inspire you:

"Every day do something that will inch you closer to a better tomorrow."

I want to report a healthy addition to our cash pot!!!  The Jeff Taylor family have all pitched in to bump it up a bit!  Fun, fun!

Way to go Jen

I posted a comment to your post but it disappeared and where it went nobody knows. I guess I don't know how to do that. So what you get is a new post. I am really proud of what you are doing and think it's great. Don't worry about falling off your diet. When I was losing weight so many years ago, I said that I would eat whatever was served at church functions, etc. I was tired of those women sitting around looking smug and smiling and saying, "I'm on a diet." I wasn't on a diet but was having success losing weight. Besides that, a dessert auction sounds fun.

I read an article in the Reader's Digest by a guy that leaned towards the Atkins diet. He said it wasn't the fats you eat but the carbs. Maybe he has something there. I'll have to go read the article again.

By the way, Jenny, have I told you that I love you and I'm glad you are working to improve your health and happiness? Well, I do and I am. Keep up the good work. You're going in the right direction.

Love, Mom

Check In

Hey everyone -- It's about time I checked in! I have been accomplishing my goal of 90 minutes of exercise a week but I really wanted to improve on that and extend myself. Part of the 90 minutes has been a weekly walk with friends which doesn't feel like a real workout to me. I know it is part of just being active but I feel I need to get my heart rate up. The weather hasn't cooperated as well. I know . . . California is supposed to be great but we have had a lot of rain so it has hampered our trips to the track. I was doing well but my enemy is food. I was slimming down (just a little), feeling better but then was derailed by the dessert auction at church. Everyone is so busy that the family exercise, bonding time hasn't happened. Hey, I did take the stairs at the Doctor's office when I went to pick up the kid's forms and it is great to read about everyone's success -- helps to motivate! . . . As a matter of fact I'm going to work out on the elliptical right now! BTW . . . Quote is coming soon!!

Proud of Al

This is mom on February 17, 2011

Sorry about sending that other thing. I don't know what happened. I just read both Devin and Al's post. I'm really impressed at what they are doing. Way to go, Al on your weight loss. I know it is so hard but that you will feel so much better about yourself.

Well, here I go reminiscing again. I can remember some years ago when I decided to lose some weight. We had started a weight loss thing in Relief Society. We would meet once a week at Beth Furner's to weigh-in. She had a good scale. I think some of my girls went with me at the time. Anyway, I found that trying to cook for a family and dieting didn't exactly fit in. I decided that the only way I could lose weight was to cut my portions and up my exercise. I used to walk all over town (I think that's why my feet hurt so much today -- just kidding. I had decided that I wanted to get down to 155 lbs which was my weight when I was 9 months pregnant with Jeff and I'd never seen that again. Well, I made my goal but as is obvious, I didn't maintain it. But I remember how good I felt about myself and how good I looked. I think if I had had the support of all of you guys, I would have been able to maintain my weight. Anyway, the only way I could diet was to not eat between meals and cut down on my portions. I even allowed me a peanutbutter sandwich once a week. I couldn't bear going through life without a peanutbutter sandwich. I feel that, by golly, if everybody can do what they are doing, I can do my little bit. I want to tell Al and Devin that I love them and I'm glad you are working to improve your health and happiness.

Another trick I found is that if I feel myself wanting to snack between meals, it helps to go get a big glass of water and that seems to satisfy the urge. And,thank goodness, Ashlee, we don't have a Tuscano's.

Fashionably Late Update

This is update is a little late, but hey like they say better late than never. The previous two weeks I had been doing well until I went to Tucanos, for those who don't know that is an all you can eat Brazilian steak house. So I let my self indulge then and I recovered nicely until Monday when I realized I had a lot of school work to do and not much time. So I haven't worked out this week yet and my eating habits have taken a slight dive and forget about going to bed at a decent time.

Though I have continued wearing my pedometer and my goal has been to get above 10,000 steps in a day. (I think this is the recommended amount for a healthy life style) I generally meet this goal every day. This may come from the fact that it is very difficult to find parking on campus and I generally do have to walk from what many affectionately call Outer Darkness. So I guess I only really need to work on 2 things from Sharon's list :).

Another help in my life to be healthier is that my roommate, Krista, was been diagnosed with celiac disease today and can no longer have foods containing gluten, milk, or eggs. She is having a hard time with this because she is thinking about all of the things she can't have. So I told her that it would only be a benefit because we actually have to think about what we can eat, and that we will have to be creative. We have already been trying to cut our carbs and have been creative by making "spaghetti" with asparagus for the noodles and a parma rosa sauce. It was actually really good. We are going to have to start making things from scratch now too because there are lots processed foods that have gluten in them.

All in all things are looking up. And if the weather would just make up its darn mind and stay warm I am ready to break my bike out of storage, I was hoping we would have good weather this weekend. Oh well until then I will stick to the gym and workout tapes.

Second month in and going strong!

This is a dual purpose post.

I was really struck by one of the quotes Mom put in her last letter so it is my new official mantra.

I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

– Maya Angelou

That's life's plan in a nutshell.

As for the last couple weeks, they've been pretty good. Two weeks ago I logged 12.5 miles plus three weight workouts. Last week I only ran two day for a total of 7.4 miles but I did P90 cardio one day and skied two day. This week I've already put in 12 miles with two workout days left to go. I want to get up to 20 miles a week without feeling close to death.

I'm telling you, the Nike+ thing is pretty cool. I love tracking my miles and times and pace and calories burned and automatically posting it to my facebook wall so I can brag. I haven't lost any weight and even though that wasn't one of my goals, I would still like to shed a few pounds. It just makes me realize how important the quality and quantity of food intake is.

Like the photo illustrates, it's always nice to have friends/co-workers/family to push you. I wasn't planning on doing Ab Ripper X, but somebody suggested it so we did it. (My boss took the photo and put it on facebook)

Hope everybody's enjoying some success and feeling motivated!

New Shoes

This is Mom on February 16, 2011

I want to report that I went out and bought me a new pair of walking shoes that cost me an arm and a leg. I tried to get them to take two legs as my arms seem to work without much pain -- if you don't count my hands. I also bought me a pair of shoes to wear to church which also cost me an arm and a leg. Then I went to the grocery store where I parked on the far side of the parking lot. Then I walked to the dollar store and back to the car and then into the grocery store where I pushed a cart around and around -- at least 10 miles. It was at lunchtime so I killed two birds with one stone. I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast twice a week but I told Dad this morning not to make me any because he makes it with very little salt and I can't bring myself to eat it. I bought some celery to eat everyday at lunchtime. I want to tell Ashlee that I love her and I'm glad she is working to improve her health and happiness. I am so proud of her. So that's a pretty good start on the first day after I received the challenge. Please keep in mind that my walks are more like strolls, but I'm trying.

Keith Checking in Mid February:

I am excited for the challenges ahead for the year. Specifically this coming week as we head to Beaver, UT for a snow trip. My plan has been to climb 12,001' peak of Mt. Holly at the out of bounds gate & ride down that. This will be a pretty good physically challenging feat! 2 years ago, I could not have even considered this as 'part' of my day. It would have taken me the entire day and quite frankly it would not have even been somewhat enjoyable.
My bi-weekly progress is coming along very well. I usually ride my bike 8.3 miles to work fri/sat/sun nights & 8.3 miles home sat/sun/mon morning. This equates to 50 miles of riding over the weekend. Then we work out all week. We have been adding a day of swimming at the YMCA into our week I am up to 975 yards of freestyle stroke and 25 yards of butterfly(more like the caterpillar without the wings yet!) I am feeling awesome! We hike a lot also. I figured it out the other day and I excersize about 12 - 14 times a week. I am down to 36.5" around the big part of my waist. This is down from 38". So I am very excited about that! I hope you are all making the most of this opportunity. Next year when you can do more than this year you will feel so accomplished as I do. Plus I don't think Sharon has made it extremely clear but so far there is $100 up for grabs for the winner! Plus I will be making a "Golden Sneaker" Trophy to go to the winner. Get up off the couches everyone! Sitting is over rated!

Bonus February Challenge!!!

February is over half-way gone, but you've still got just about 2 weeks to earn an extra point this month.  Since it's all about love, valentines and hearts this month, do a little something extra for your heart health!

For 1 bonus point toward the "Not-So-Dumbbell" award you must do at least 3 on the following list of activities:

  • Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator when the opportunity presents itself.
  • Park your car at the far end of the parking lot.
  • Spend a few minutes of your lunch break taking a stroll.
  • Perform your housework like vacuuming, shoveling snow, etc., a little extra vigorously than usual so you notice your heart actually pumping.
  • Schedule an after-dinner family walk. Make it quality time.
  • Eat oatmeal for breakfast or snack (preferably with minimal sugar/butter).
  • Add a fruit/vegetable to at least one meal every day (preferably green and/or fibrous).
  • Say this phrase to a person you love:  "I love you and I'm glad you are working to improve your health and happiness."
Easy way to earn an extra point, huh?  Keep track of which ones you do by Feb. 28 at 12 midnight and let me know so I can award you!

Sharon's Progress Report

I'm sorry that I've been a slacker on reporting.  I mean I expect it of the rest of you guys... kidding!  Well, kinda.  Keith points out that I need to stay on top of it because nobody else thinks about the Golden Sneakers or remembers things about it the way I do.  And he's right!  And I honestly don't expect you to; this is my baby, after all.  Really, you can report in any time you want to.  You can post something to boast about your progress (this is a competition after all), you can post something as a cry for help (we are family, after all) or you can post something simply to ramble (I do that a LOT!)  So I'll be more on the ball and make sure I post at least bi-weekly and encourage you guys to do the same!  I can easily shift the blame this weekend, though, to my poor, sick girls who gave us a couple of bad nights around here.

Anyway, I had a pretty good week last week:  5 workouts and logged 13.6 running miles.  I'm pleased enough with that.  I'm still not recording my eating habits like I want to.  I did put a little notebook in the kitchen where I think I wrote down one single meal I ate last week.  Well, it's a start.  Progress, not perfection!

Rebecca's Mantra

We got another motivating mantra:

I like it.  Thanks Beck!

Al's Progress

I guess we need to update everyone on how we are doing, which I not sure that I want to do, but figure it is my for my own good to be accountable. Plus it might motivate me to keep a report of my progress. I have a goal to loss 100 lbs, I was worried about this but if I do it I will be happy for accomplishing my goal. Well, since January 1st I have lost 19 lbs. Many of you haven't seen me and for those who have probably just didn't notice but since October I have lost 70lbs. The greatest thing about this is even losing that much weight my body feels better. It has been easier to get around, not being so tired and being able to do more. My problem now is I can't keep my pants up and I am going to have to either get a new belt or some new pants. The thing that has helped me is cutting back on what I eat. As a result my appetite has changed and I eat half of what I used to. One of the things that has also helped me is that I feel the Lord has been helping me over the last several months. I feel like he is making me a better person. I have been working on many aspect of my life and things have been improving. I look forward to some better weather and have plans to stay active with my kids this summer.

We are planning on planting a garden and many other things as a family. I am not one who has ever enjoyed running, but I do like to stay active and my kids need to be able to release that energy. My quote: "Do what you can and can the rest" This is a quote that came from my Mission Presidents wife. It is something that I have always tried to live, somethings are out of our hands and when we can't do it, that is when the Lord will help us.

Latest Report

This is Mom making my report for the last two weeks.

We just got back from Spokane but I knew I would have to report before I went to bed. I was a little negligent in my workout this past week. I met my goal the first week but this week I only walked three days out of the four. I don't know what I did on Wednesday but by the time I got home from my walk, my feet were killing me. We got up on Thursday and headed up to Spokane. I still had every intention of completing my goal. However the wind was blowing out of the north and really cold and Dad took my coat, gloves, and head band up to Mount Spokane with him and I'll be darned if I was going to walk in the wind without them. So I didn't get out on Friday. However, I still had Saturday ahead of me to complete my goal. I just didn't get out and do it. I'm like Ashlee! I feel so much better when I have completed my goal. There's just something about getting outdoors in the sunshine and enjoying a brisk walk. However you wouldn't recognize my walk as a brisk one -- more like an old lady one. So there is my report for what it is worth. I will try to do better during the next two weeks.

Sharon's Inspiring Words

Wow, I just realized I haven't shared my mantras with you yet.  I need to earn my point, dang it!  Okay, my mantras will not really come as a surprise, since I've already been posting them like crazy on my blogs and comments.  But I'm stickin' to 'em because they've been helpful for me lately.

See, I've got them posted on my mirror!

Do It Anyway

This phrase again came to my rescue during a recent 6 mile run.  I wanted to stop and walk so bad because I was tired and it was tough and uphill.  Wah, wah.  I thought of this mantra and it kept me running the whole way.  It was hard for me, but I "Did It Anyway"!

It's about progress, not perfection.

This gives me comfort and keeps me focused on the big picture.  Many of you (and myself included) have expressed your disappointment in not doing very well on your goals so far.  But just ask yourself if you made any progress this week as opposed to last.  If not, then - yeah - you need to get busy!  But if you made even some slight progress, you're inching toward your goal.  Make some more progress next week and start striding - not just inching - toward that goal!

Those that haven't yet - turn in those mantras/quotes!  I need some more inspiration!

Another try

This is from Mom. I have put my mantra on my bathroom wall because I'm always in the bathroom. After all, I don't want to be dead last. Marie, we just followed your email instructions and they work. It makes me wonder what I've been doing all this time. We finally found out what gmail meant. Gmail is Google mail. Maybe we're onto something afterall.

Dave Hinckley End of Jan reporting

First off here are a couple of my favorite "mantras" relating to my goals:
"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great" -Zig Ziglar
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle

As Erin and I are trying to settle in and accomplish our goals, we are finding as I'm sure most of us in this challenge, that getting into our "healthy" routines is such a change and challenge from our lazy, easier, and very busy lives. So far I have lost 6 pounds but it is sometimes hard just to see a number on a scale. I want to see my clothes fitting better, my face thinning out, have more energy, and feel all around better. I am finding that envisioning my two possibilities at the end of this year (either being fat and unhealthy or fit, healthy, and happy) is helping me stay on track better than the scale is right now. I'm the king of wanting good results immediately but I'm trying to remember I need to be patient, accomplish my smaller goals daily, and persevere to become the fit, healthy and happy person I can close my eyes and see.

P.S. Sharon, I don't know if you want us to post on here with our reports or email them directly to you. Let me know, thanks

Cash Pot - Off To A Good Start

I'm going to keep a running tally on the blog on the side bar so we can all be reminded of what's waiting for the big winner.

That number is what is actually physically sitting in the safe at this moment.  Some of you have promised to contribute and as soon as I get it in-hand, I'll add it to the tally.  I'm excited about the amount already.  I can't wait to see what it's up to by March 1.  Yeeehawww!

By the way, I'm loving the mantras so far!  Keep 'em coming.  I'm still working on mine.  I'm having a hard time deciding which I like best.

Monthly Challenge - February

Point Value: 1

Find a mission statement or mantra or short quote that is meaningful and inspirational to you.  Print it out, post it somewhere you will see it daily and verbally repeat it at least once a day this month.

I'm smart enough,
and, doggonit, people like me."

Why are you doing this?  Why do these goals matter to you?

“Decide what you would become, then do what you have to do." - Epictetus, Roman Stoic
